FAQ: Comcast Xfinity Offers 3 Gig Internet Speeds

FAQ: Comcast Xfinity Offers 3 Gig Internet Speeds
Technology

Comcast's Xfinity currently has the fastest internet service of any major ISP, with 3 Gig Speed now available nationwide. At the end of September 2021, Xfinity began delivering symmetrical download/upload 3 Gbps; however, these speeds were only available in a few places of Xfinity's Northeast and Central regions of the United States.

Xfinity introduced its 3 Gig service to its Western region in November 2021, making these ultra-fast speeds available across the country.

Pricing

The 3 Gig service from Xfinity isn't a brand-new internet option. Instead, Xfinity's most expensive plan, Xfinity "Gigabit Pro," has been upped from 2 Gbps to 3 Gbps. Despite the fact that speeds are improving, Xfinity has stated that cost would not.

That's not to suggest the Gigabit Pro plan isn't still a bargain. It is considering Xfinity's monthly fee of $299.95. The gigabit Pro package is one of the most costly internet plans in the US, with activation costs that may cost customers up to $1,000.

Customers must sign a two-year commitment in addition to paying Xfinity's service fees. Customers can be fined up to $230 if they break the contract.

Xfinity Gigabit Pro vs. Xfinity Gigabit

For those who don't want to pay nearly $300 per month, Xfinity still has their "Xfinity Gigabit" internet package, which offers speeds of up to 1.2 Gbps for only $70 per month. This plan only provides upload speeds of 35 Mbps with Xfinity Gigabit.

The disparity between the Gigabit Pro plan's 3,000 Mbps upload speeds and the Gigabit plan's 35 Mbps upload speeds is due to the fact that Xfinity's Gigabit package employs a cable connection rather than a fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) connection. The Gigabit Pro plan is Xfinity's sole fiber optic cable-based plan.

Who qualifies for the Xfinity Gigabit Pro package?

Aside from the high price, another disadvantage of Xfinity's Gigabit Pro plan is that only a tiny percentage of consumers are eligible for the service, and finding out if a residence qualifies for the plan might take a long time.

According to the Federal Communications Commission, less than 1% of Xfinity subscribers have access to the company's fiber plan. Xfinity can't tell if a consumer is eligible for its Gigabit Pro package just by looking at its address.

Xfinity, on the other hand, must first undertake a site survey. This requires physically visiting a customer's home and determining whether or not the residence is close enough to a fiber node. Even if the site assessment is successful, a customer's fiber internet service may take several weeks to arrive.

The Xfinity Gigabit Pro plan is fantastic for customers looking for the very fastest speeds on the market; but, due to its premium cost, lengthy activation process, and two-year contract requirement, many customers may prefer Xfinity's Gigabit plan instead.
