AT&T Internet OVERVIEW

AT&T offers fiber optic and hybrid DSL internet connections. They offer a variety of plans with bundles including tv, home phone service, and internet.

AT&T Internet TECHNOLOGY

AT&T offers fiber optic and hybrid DSL internet connections. They offer a variety of plans with bundles including tv, home phone service, and internet.
They offer DSL, marketed as AT&T U-verse, a technology that leverages fiber-to-the-node (FTTN) layout where the fiber optic cable terminates at a specific point near customers. The final stretch to the subscriber’s residence will be reached through telephone, ethernet and coaxial cable. This network is thought as a hybrid fiber network and it has allowed AT&T the advantage to offer high bandwidth plans than would be traditionally expected from DSL plans.[1]

The best scenario is if the consumer service address is located in an area where AT&T offers fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) in some areas. FTTH is considered the “gold standard” for strong, fast, and reliable home internet connection.

Charter Spectrum OVERVIEW

Charter Communications offers broadband Internet, TV, and phone service to consumers via their hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) network.

Charter Spectrum TECHNOLOGY

Charter Communications offers broadband Internet, TV, and phone service to consumers via their hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) network.

Hybrid Fiber Coaxial is an infrastructure that uses the fiber optic combined with the coaxial cables. The fiber optic cables join a node called an “optical node” where all fiber cables from a network rejoin and then serve the customer using slower bandwidth to serve the customers at their residence or business.

The interesting element of HFC is that it generally uses existing cable TV network to transmit internet broadband. The translation from optic signals into electrical signals (to be transported by coaxial cables) occurs at the optical node. The average node will serve between 50 to 2000 households.

This type of connective technology is more so often referred to as “cable internet connection” due to the fact that the network uses existing coaxial cables that were originally used for “cable TV.”

BUYING VS RENTING A MODEM FROM YOUR PROVIDER

Do not get in the trap of renting instead of buying a modem.

There is not much to consider here, but the frequency that you change internet providers. If you have a history of being consistent with your internet company, please do yourself a favor and purchase a modem. Make sure that modem is compatible with the provider you are using. Modem rental fees from many broadband providers just keep increasing every year. Pay the modem upfront and you will avoid those monthly equipment fees. If you purchase the modem you will be paying the price of a full year of modem rental. However, look at the bright side: it will be paid out the first year and for the rest of the time you will use it, you could say that it is “free of charge.”

TELEVISION AND STREAMING: CUT THE CORD, OR KEEP THE CHANNELS?

More streaming less cable TV.

U-verse and Charter both offer TV options bundled with internet and/or phone. What is essential to take into account is the specific channels you desire and the on-demand options that are available for those providers.

Many customers choose to “cut the cord” and forego TV service entirely in favor of online services like Hulu and Youtube. On the other hand, if you are regularly watching TV channels, you will thrive on a good TV subscription. Make it an internet and TV bundle for the best value.

The key aspect to consider is the data caps. If you decide to forego without cable TV, you will be streaming all the time. Check the data caps to make sure you do not “bust” your plan.
